‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?

Phototherapy is definitely experiencing a wave of attention. There are now available illuminated devices for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines as well as sore muscles and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device enhanced with miniature red light sources, promoted by the creators as “a breakthrough in personal mouth health.” Internationally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, relaxing muscles, reducing swelling and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.

“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a Durham University professor, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”

Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight

UVB radiation effects, like erythema or pigmentation, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – that reduces potential hazards. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, thus exposure is controlled,” explains the dermatologist. Essentially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue LEDs, he explains, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, amid the sea of devices now available, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. There are lots of questions.”

Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – despite the fact that, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Advanced Research and Cellular Mechanisms

At the same time, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that claims seem exaggerated. But his research has thoroughly changed his mind in that respect.

The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, however two decades past, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I remained doubtful. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that many assumed was biologically inert.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who prioritized neurological investigations. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is always very good.”

With 1070 treatment, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In low doses this substance, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

These processes show potential for neurological conditions: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cellular cleanup – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
